Nazareth has a population of 60,000 Arabs (70% Muslim, 30% Christian) and a growing population of around 60,000 Jews in Nazareth Illit. The staff at the hospital are mainly local and are supplemented by overseas volunteers, who work in a variety of areas from nursing tutors, nursing aides, carpenters, and gardeners to providing specialist assistance on business management and IT skills.

School of Nursing
From its early years the EMMS had emphasised the importance of training local people as part of its medical missionary policy and had, for many years, trained young women as Licensed Practical Nurses.
By 1986 the courses were upgraded to that of Registered Nurse and in 2001 the School started to offer a BA Degree in nursing in conjunction with a college in Afula. The School of Nursing is fully recognised by the Israeli Ministry of Health as an accredited training establishment and each year around 30/35 students graduate.
A new purpose-built building, within the hospital compound, has been built in conjunction with Biblelands for the School of Nursing.

The Challenge of the Future
In the 21st Century the Nazareth Hospital is still developing, adapting to the needs of the community it serves. It aims to be a hospital at the heart of the life of its diverse community, continuing to have a strong Christian identity as it witnesses to Christ through its ministry of healing and reconciliation between peoples.
